Two Fairfield University senior students were arrested on Saturday on disorderly conduct charges related to a party they allegedly hosted on the beach area, police records obtained by The Mirror show.
According to the Fairfield Police Department, the pair of Fairfield Dolan School of Business students was hosting a “large party” on their beach property on Saturday when, at just before 4 p.m., they received a noise complaint and were sent to investigate.
“Fairfield Police officers responded to a noise complaint on Fairfield Beach Road and found a large gathering where music could be heard from the roadway. Officers also observed multiple open container violations and pedestrians in the street as a result of the party,” said Sergeant Jenna Wellington in a statement to The Fairfield Mirror regarding the beach incident.
Both of the students were arrested on the scene and charged with a single charge of disorderly conduct, which is a class C misdemeanor in Connecticut. If they are convicted, the students face a maximum penalty of a $500 fine or up to three months in jail.
The duo, who may also face disciplinary action from Fairfield University’s Office of the Dean of Students, did not respond to The Mirror’s requests for comment.
In a statement, a Fairfield University spokesperson said the Dean’s Office reviews all reports of alleged violations of the code.
“Fairfield University’s Student Conduct Code applies to all University students for both on and off-campus behavior, documented by the Fairfield Police Department, students, and community residents,” said Fairfield University Vice President of Marketing and Communications Jennifer Anderson. “The University cannot provide further comment or details regarding individual students or the outcome of student conduct processes.”
Under the university’s disciplinary process, the university “reserves the right to withhold issuance of a diploma, regardless of degree requirement completion,” where violations of the code are implicated.
Fairfield University Student Association also sent an email to students on Tuesday saying that they are engaging in conversations with the Chief of Police and other town officials over “what happened this weekend and how we can move forward with the integrity of our student life intact.” The association said they are participating in those conversations to protect the student body’s interests.
In light of the arrests, the police department is reminding students that when gatherings create “an unreasonable disturbance or become an issue of safety, enforcement action may be taken against those hosting the gathering.
“We want to remind residents that if a gathering becomes larger than expected, it is the host’s responsibility to keep it under control,” Wellington added. “If unwanted guests show up, it is important to act quickly by either dispersing them or contact police for help, before things escalate.”
Both students were released on $500 bonds and are scheduled to appear in the Bridgeport Superior Court on Sept. 25.
